I am currently a Head of Modern Languages in a large secondary school in the North East Of England. I also work with the local University with PGCE MFL students, an area of my work I thoroughly enjoy. I am passionate about teaching and learning, and have a particular interest in the teaching of grammar and of literary texts to develop reading, writing and listening skills. I am currently working on developing a range of resources to support the study of Le Petit Nicolas and the series of books.

Designed and used this using listening strategies. The cards on one of the slides with the pictures of animals need to be cut up and laminated ( for keeping ) and given to students. This is to help them concentrate and focus on what is necessary to listen out for ... it normally works well in 6th - 8th grade, even early 10th grade. You can make everything harder !

Building blocks to show students how to add. Refers to a style of writing/style and students could be encouraged to use another tense. This includes mini review with mini whiteboard, opportunities for peer assessment.

Gap fill and error correcting : verbs in the present and reflexive verbs French grammar practice.

(1)
This activity is designed to help students to develop their expertise in using the verbs to have and to be in French with correct forms, and to memorise and practise using correct pronouns for difficult reflexive verbs. the red is to support students to find the errors and the green indicates the subject so students can be encouraged to use these as a clue for both the verb formation and the gap fill for the work on reflexive verbs. There should be a fine balance between challenge and support for all abilities in this activity but feedback and comments are more than welcome.

The pluperfect workout in French in 4 easy steps

Simple resource to support students in understanding how to build this tense. The document can be easily adapted to the level of the students using this resource. I have left some clues for the conjugations of to have and to be spellings, but they can just be removed for further challenge.

Celebrations. GCSE French Theme 1. Exploiting texts

I attach two texts, two for the students to identify what makes a good piece of writing in French and one easier text for a trap door game ’ which can be teacher led ( teacher reads the text twice, students listen, memorize with pens down and then rewrite the text from memory and then translate . With the longer texts you may help students identify the good practice with the help of the mark scheme, I also tend to organize games ( in two, one with a pencil, one with a pen, teacher calls out a sentence, first pupil to circle the sentence, dominant colour on the sheet wins )

Use of DOP and pronouns in French. using ' dodgy English'

This is a resource that I created to support my year 10 through the use of DOP. They are used to ' dodgy English' and I am sharing this as they enjoyed the activities and gave me good feedback ( it has helped them massively and they are now confident with those ), especially the translation which they used a learning and consolidating activity. I have in my free resources a Power Point you can also access to teach the initial stages and the words for the needed DOPS for these activities.

The negative form in French with ideas for consolidation activities

The ideas for consolidation are on the very last slide. They contain tips on activities I have tried with all ages and ranges of abilities and some have a competitive elements. The first slides explain the pitfalls of the word order and try to pre-empt errors such as word order, questions that should not be asked and issues of little words that often get forgotten about as students become concerned with handling more complex language.

Un groupe de musiciens. Year 7. Developing reading and translation skills.

I have designed this to support my year 7 in developing reading/ writing / translating skills. I started with the text ( pair work competition : each pupil has a different colour pen, the first to circle the translation in French in the text wins the point and it is quite visual at the end who is fastest . Great fro competition The other activities involve finding translations, matching up for lower ability and extending sentences from the given text. The last slide on the Power Point contains a writing list of bullet points ( goes with Studio 1 ’ il est hypercool’ but can be adapted for other courses. I owe Rachel Hawkes a big thank you for inspiring the Power Point slides offering differentiation when sentence building on mini whiteboards. I hope it is useful.

My plans for the future - French GCSE

This resource fits in any module, covering the topic of jobs and plans for the future for KS4 French, but could also be used for students in higher ability groups in Year 9. It contains a Power point and a full lesson plan, as well as resources for differentiation which can be tweaked and amended as necessary. The lesson was observed and judged ' outstanding' so I hope it is useful to colleagues.

Based on the module Planet Facebook in Studio 3. I have created a slightly longer text on use of social networking sites. This helps learning and understanding of regular verbs and gives opportunities to learn and identify structures for use of own vocabulary when writing and speaking about this topic.
